Adams could become special recruit

Because Darrell Adams played in a scrimmage, the 2015 standout had to sit out his entire junior season because of transfer rules but Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep coach Desmond Gumbs says his star player could be something special.

Jets injury report: Four players sit

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes (hamstring) and tight end Jeff Cumberland (concussion) did not practice Thursday, and the Jets don't expect to have either player available Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Guard Willie Colon (calf) also did not practice, for the second consecutive day. But Colon is planning to play against the Saints. "It's looking promising," Colon told reporters Thursday afternoon. Running back Alex Green (hamstring) was the fourth player who did not practice Thursday.

Nelson says he was fined for hit on Jones

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets wide receiver David Nelson, accused of dirty play last Sunday by Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, said Thursday he was fined by the NFL for an unnecessary-roughness penalty on Jones in the third quarter of the Jets' 49-9 loss. Nelson wouldn't disclose the amount of the fine, but he said he will appeal it. Jones said after the game that Nelson committed three cheap shots after the whistle and deserved to be fined for each one.

Injuries leave Vikings thin in secondary

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Cornerback Chris Cook and safety Jamarca Sanford both missed practice for the Vikings again on Thursday with a strained hip muscle and groin, respectively, and time is running out to get either player ready for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Leslie Frazier said both players could play on Sunday if they were able to do enough in practice on Friday to prove they'd be ready to go in Dallas, but he still wasn't sure if he could expect much from the two starters.

Griffin's injury and covering Jared Cook

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- If defensive coordinator Jerry Gray wants to throw the St. Louis Rams off the Tennessee Titans' tracks, he can come up with something better than what he tried Thursday. With free safety Michael Griffin missing a second day of practice with a right quad injury, the Titans might need to turn to an alterative at free safety. The logical, obvious choice is George Wilson. But Gray said in his weekly media session that the Titans could move Alterraun Verner from cornerback to safety or turn to Corey Lynch, who was just signed at the start of the week.

DeSean Jackson limited by 'tweaked' ankle

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson was limited for a second day of practice after injuring his ankle during Wednesday’s session. Coach Chip Kelly downplayed the severity of the injury before Thursday’s practice. “He's going to come out and practice today,” Kelly said. “Yeah, he hurt his ankle. He should be full [participation]. We'll see what he can do and what the effects are, but he just rolled it or tweaked it or whatever, but he's going today.

David DeCastro still out for Steelers

PITTSBURGH -- Injuries decimated the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive line in a 21-18 loss at Oakland. But the Steelers’ starting front five could be intact Sunday when the team visits New England for a 4:25 p.m. ET game. “I expect all guys to get back, especially (David) DeCastro who has been busting his tail in rehab,” starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert said. “He’s walking a lot better.” DeCastro has yet to practice this week because of a right ankle injury he sustained in Oakland.

Injury report: Kelechi Osemele sits out

For the second straight day, the Baltimore Ravens didn't have a starting offensive lineman for practice. Left guard Kelechi Osemele (back and knee) sat out Thursday's practice after being limited Wednesday. He has dealt with this back injury throughout the season, and acknowledged he'll need surgery in the offseason. Right tackle Michael Oher (ankle), who missed Wednesday's workout, returned to have a full workout Thursday. Besides Osemele, the only other Ravens player who didn't have a full practice was wide receiver Brandon Stokley (groin), who was limited.

WR Holmes added to injury report

Oakland Raiders receiver Andre Holmes was added to the team's injury report with a hamstring issue Thursday, seemingly opening the door for second-year wideout Juron Criner to be active Sunday for the first time this season. Criner, the second of two fifth-round picks in general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen's first draft class, was slowed coming out of training camp this summer with a hamstring strain. Might Criner's first action of 2012 come against the Philadelphia Eagles?

DeMarcus Ware is closer to playing

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware said Thursday he's going to try and do some pregame warm-ups for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Ware has missed the past two games with a thigh injury, and though he's listed on the injury report as someone who didn't practice, he did participate in some individual drills. "It's like night and day," Ware said of how his leg feels. "Last week it was probably like 50 percent, and it's totally different now.

No decision on Vilma's status

METAIRIE, La. -- Linebacker Jonathan Vilma is now eligible to return to the New Orleans Saints' active roster. But coach Sean Payton did not indicate Thursday if and when the Saints plan to activate him. The Saints have until Nov. 11 to decide whether to activate Vilma or place him on season-ending injured reserve. “He’s doing well. He’s getting reps. It’s just a matter of getting back into football-playing shape,” Payton said.

For the second consecutive day, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski practiced on a limited basis as he deals with a hamstring issue on top of his previously existing back and forearm injuries. The Patriots had an identical practice participation report Thursday as they did on Wednesday, with Gronkowski one of 10 players that were limited, joined by cornerback Aqib Talib, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and running back Leon Washington, who each sat out in Week 8.

Reflective McCown 'thankful' for chance

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Every morning Josh McCown wakes up, the quarterback spends a few moments reflecting on his journey to Chicago. McCown served as an assistant coach at Marvin Ridge High School in 2011 and 2012, and twice the Bears pulled him away to become a backup quarterback to Jay Cutler, who is out again for this week's matchup against the Green Bay Packers with a torn groin muscle. In his first start for Chicago, in 2011, McCown led the club to 21 points -- the most the Bears have scored during Cutler’s tenure against Green Bay -- in a 35-21 loss at Lambeau Field.

LeBeau gives Jones a vote of confidence

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Steelers officially demoted rookie outside linebacker Jarvis Jones to second team earlier this week. But that doesn’t mean Dick LeBeau is in any way discouraged about the progress the team’s first-round pick is making. The longtime defensive coordinator, in fact, gave Jones a vote of confidence less than a week after the latter played just 11 snaps in the Steelers’ 21-18 loss at Oakland. “I think Jarvis is on schedule for a first-year linebacker,” LeBeau said.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, who missed the past two games with hamstring and ankle injuries, could return to practice Friday if cleared by the doctor Thursday, head coach Mike Smith said. He did not participate Thursday, but was on the field observing in a floppy hat after some running drills with the training staff. Adrian Peterson heads home to Texas

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Last December, when Adrian Peterson traveled to Houston for the Vikings' game against the Texans, he got requests for more than 100 tickets from family and friends. Peterson lives in Houston in the offseason, and he was returning to Texas for a regular-season game for the first time since his rookie season in 2007. But Peterson grew up in Palestine, Texas, just under two hours southeast of Dallas. He rooted for the Cowboys as they won championships in the early 1990s and attended one game at Texas Stadium as the guest of a local reporter as a junior in high school.

Playing Davis is worth the risk for Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Time was, the Kansas City Chiefs looked ready to give up on rookie running back Knile Davis, at least for this season. A prolific fumbler who would also occasionally line up in the wrong place or run the wrong play, Davis at times disappeared from the game plan. GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Although the Green Bay Packers listed receiver James Jones as a limited participant in practice Thursday, he may not be any closer to playing than he was last week. Jones has not played since he sprained his left knee Oct. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens. On this Thursday, though, Williams arrived at the podium with an opening statement that almost seemed like something he had rehearsed. Josh Robinson, on his growing pains

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- For as much as the Minnesota Vikings have continued to play Josh Robinson as their slot cornerback through all of his struggles this season, they've also been consistent about managing expectations for the second-year player. Coach Leslie Frazier and defensive coordinator Alan Williams have said they expected the Vikings' young secondary -- and Robinson in particular -- to struggle this season, acknowledging the team's porous pass defense as a cost of doing business with so many inexperienced players.

And left tackle Jared Veldheer, who underwent surgery on his left triceps in August, is closer to returning after a check-up Monday with his doctor in Los Angeles found no setbacks. “Everything’s real positive,” Veldheer said Wednesday.

Rex gives Milliner another start, shot in arm

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Struggling rookie cornerback Dee Milliner will remain in the starting lineup when the New York Jets take on the New Orleans Saints this coming Sunday. Coach Rex Ryan said so Wednesday -- and he didn't stop there. "I think with Dee, one thing when I went back, I watched that tape -- he's a lot closer than I think given credit for," Ryan said. "He's close to being that player that we want. And I will say this -- by the time this season's over, I think he will be the best rookie corner and playing better than any rookie corner in this year's draft.

Little things make difference for Newton

CHARLOTTE N.C. -- Cam Newton's passer rating (130.3) is higher than any quarterback in the NFL the past three games. His quarterback rating (88.2) is the third best during that stretch. His 77.3 completion percentage is light years ahead of where he was during his first two seasons. "He's playing probably at the highest level of any quarterback in the league if you look at the last three games," said Atlanta coach Mike Smith, whose struggling Falcons are next up for the Carolina Panthers star.

Bengals can't get caught up in blowout

MIAMI -- It was a comment Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis made in passing, at the tail end of a broader point he was trying to emphasize. Like many quotes he and countless other coaches often give at news conferences, it was the type of statement that could have easily been thrown away, dismissed as being something comparatively insignificant. But upon further review, the point Lewis was making is actually a pretty strong one, and one Bengals fans have to hope their team was paying attention to.

Gronkowski limited with hamstring injury

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- After practicing fully for the first time all season this past Friday, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was limited Wednesday due to a hamstring injury to go on top of his existing back and forearm issues. Gronkowski spoke with reporters on Wednesday, though he did not make any mention of the injury and it is unclear how severe it is and when it occurred. Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly (knee) and Leon Washington (ankle) were limited participants in their return to practice on Wednesday, as were cornerbacks Aqib Talib (hip) and Kyle Arrington (groin), who left last Sunday's game early.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Running back Jamaal Charles for the fourth time in nine weeks made an appearance on the Kansas City Chiefs’ injury report. It’s the third injury of the season for Charles, who earlier had a sore quadriceps muscle and extensive blisters on his feet.

Will cast limit Matthews' impact?

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Clay Matthews’ hands are an integral part of his repertoire as a pass rusher. For that matter, they’re important to his ability to get his jersey off, something he struggled with after Wednesday’s team picture at Lambeau Field. Redskins Film Review: Offense

Yes, the Redskins stopped running the ball in the fourth quarter (after running it on six of their eight plays in the third). But the first two series in the fourth quarter did not bother me. They threw the ball on their first three plays, but the first play begged for a pass: After playing a seven-man front for most of the game, Denver walked the safety up on the right side. He bit hard on the play fake; it was perfect for the play call until Robert Griffin III threw too far inside of Morgan.
