Football Views

If you are like me you are pretty much still shocked that no CBA has been reached for the best sport in the world. Well with that said here are some observations as we lead up to what might be the last real NFL activity for a while.

• The more I read about some of these “second-tier” QBs the more I get the impression that teams like Carolina, Buffalo and/or Arizona might hold off grabbing a QB too early and instead fill another need and then get a QB in round two they can develop at half the price. Don’t get me wrong Gabbert and Newton still go round 1 but maybe not as high as we thought. Just a hunch as is there a large difference between Gabbert and Newton and say Ponder, Locker, Dalton, Kapernick, and Mallett. One thing is you might see teams like Tennessee, Minnesota, San Francisco and Washington trade back up into round 1 and grab one of “Other Guys” and fill a need with their higher first round pick.

• Seems to me that if we don’t have an agreement right before the draft then we are looking at a long wait. Owners and players would likely want it before the draft so UFA can be signed after the draft instead of exposing them to other leagues.

• Granted the NFL is the best game in town but when they don’t have game these players will have the option to look elsewhere and unlike their NFL counterparts get a paycheck and get the chance to play football. If this is a long strike (say August) I personally hope it eventually means short regimes of power for both Roger Goodell and DeMaurie Smith. Not big fans of anyone who interrupts my game.

• If you get the chance go see Late Rounders…must see TV. Anyone who loves this time of year will LOVE this movie.

• The longer the strike lasts the smarter guys like Gruden, Cowher, and Jeff Fisher look to owners.

• Names to learn Adam Froman, Anthony Allen, Dion Lewis, Charles Clay, Greg Salas, Jock Sanders, Virgil Green, David Mims, Marcus Gilbert, Marcus Cannon, John Moffitt, Jake Kirkpatrick, Sam Acho, Christian Ballard, Phil Taylor, Brian Duncan, Mason Foster, J.T. Thomas, Ras-I Dowling, Marcus Gilchrist, Jaiquawn Jarrett and Joe Lefeged.

• By the way I for one lost all sympathy for the NFLPA when they floated the idea of forcing the players to skip the draft. Really concerned about the fans that go to the draft, watch it on TV and on-line by pressuring these kids to miss the draft. Nice. You are as greedy and immature as the owners. When asked who do I support the players or the owners I say “The Fans!!”
