Round 1
1. Carolina: Cam Newton QB Auburn…real tough spot for the Panthers. How would you like to have the sexy pick presented to you but unlike the last 25 years you have no idea what contract terms you might have to play by to sign him. Tough spot but too tempting to pass on Newton.
2. Denver: Marcell Dareus DE Alabama…As the Broncos reshape their team they add the best defensive line the draft has to offer. Marcell can line up just about anywhere on the line and will likely contend for a starting job in camp (whenever that is).
3. Buffalo: Blaine Gabbert QB Missouri...Best situation for a young QB to come in and sit for a year or two behind a veteran who will perform well enough to keep fans from screaming for the rookie. Similar of Bledsoe to Romo, Favre to Rodgers and Vinny to Pennington.
4. Cincinnati: Von Miller OLB Texas A&M…It appears obvious that a change at QB is happening but like with so much nothing is certain. With that said the Bengals who don’t follow the norm the feel is they need to increase the heat on the QB and Miller is the best OLB on the board.
5. Arizona: A.J. Green WR Georgia…Offense..offense..offense. Cards need to increase the offense significantly in order to return to the post season. With no QB warrant a top 5 pick they add Green a nearly unstoppable force at Georgia. With so many QBs in the late 1st round/early 2nd Cards may roll the dice and get the QB next or sign a free agent whenever the CBA is agreed on.
6. Cleveland: Julio Jones WR Alabama…While they have holes to fill on defense they need some weapons to keep the offense on the field and Jones is that and a lot more. Immediately because the #1 option in the passing game and a beast of a player for corners to cover.
7. San Francisco: Patrick Peterson CB LSU…Another team with a QB whole but just like Arizona and Cincinnati no one grades out this high. Instead they get the most ready for action player in Peterson. You could see San Francisco trade to the bottom of round 1 to come and grab a guy like Ponder who would fit Harbaugh scheme.
8. Tennessee: Nick Fairley DT Auburn….A truly disruptive force when motivated and that’s what has been called into question. Always amazes me that a player can drop so much without ever playing a game. Can’t figure that out. Something tells me Coach Munchak will get Nick’s motor going for many years to come.
9. Dallas: Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska…another team that may go in a different direction with needs at OT and DE appearing more pressing but with the price tag the under achieving and injury prone Terrance Newman carries this just might be the direction they go. They can add Prince and cut Terrance and focus on the lines in round 2-4 as it is deep for both positions.
10. Washington: Jake Locker QB Washington….Let’s repeat Rex is not the answer but can hold the job for a year (or at least 8 games) while Jake gets his feet wet. Locker is the dual threat that Shanny loves but there is a lot of work to be done to get Locker ready to run their system. Locker has the talent just needs the proper coaching. Risky now but with his attitude, skills and desire more people will regret passing on Jake in a few years.
11. Houston: Phil Taylor DT Baylor…A little high for Taylor but the perfect wide body in the middle of a Wade Phillips defense that will drive opposing offenses crazy.
12. Minnesota: Da’Quan Bowers DE Clemson….Appears Da’Quan has some health concerns but nothing serious enough to affect his long term career. With that said Bowers is a great pick for the Vikes to add to their impressive yet aging defense line.
13. Detroit: Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College…who would you rather the #1 OT on the board or the #3 CB. The Lions seem to finally understand the draft and know they go as far as Stafford can take them and his health is priority number 1. They bring in a new body guard for Matt.
14. St. Louis: Robert Quinn DE North Carolina….Another example of #3 WR or #3 DE my feeling is that Quinn is more worthy of this selection with his talents and adds to the Rams defense as they look to improve in all areas from last season.
15. Miami: Mark Ingram RB Alabama..I’m not buying Mark’s knee is so bad people are taking him off the board. I think it’s probably more like that a team wants him and is floating false story. Should be interesting as if people do believe those reports Ingram may want to call Aaron Rodgers, Brady Quinn and Thurman Thomas for some tips to keep himself busy while he waits for his chance to prove people wrong.
16. Jacksonville: Cameron Jordan DE California….Cameron has freakish abilities and would help the Jags pass rush. Cameron’s dad is a former teammate of Coach Jack Del Rio.
17. New England (from Oakland): Tyron Smith OT USC…Pats need to replace some linemen and adding Tyron to the mix is a very nice start. Just starting to scratch his potential.
18. San Diego: J.J. Watt DE Wisconsin…..Defense struggled since Merriman departed and Watt has a great motor and burst that will make it much more difficult to pass against next season….assuming there is a next season.
19. NY Giants: Gabe Carimi OT Wisconsin…Giants have to rebuild their line and Gabe is the perfect Coach Coughlin kind of guy. Should be the starting RT at the start of the 2011 season (whenever that might be).
20. Tampa Bay: Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State…The young Bucs continue to reshape their defensive line and adding a proven mature player like Heyward is a nice coup. Heyward will push to start Day 1.
21. Kansas City: Muhammad Wilkerson DT Temple….Improvement in the push of the front seven is needed and Wilkerson is the perfect addition to a defense led by Crennel as he has the size to play anywhere on the line.
22. Indianapolis: Corey Liuget DT Illinois…As always Bill Polian takes the best player on the board when it comes to need for the team and Liuget is a tremendous talent and will certainly help the defense on all aspects.
23. Philadelphia: Mike Pouncey OG Florida…Philly need OL and corner help but can’t resist grabbing Pouncey here as they try to build up the offensive line so that when Mike Vick wants to run it’s not to save his life but by design. Pouncey can start at guard or center by the start of the season.
24. New Orleans: Aldon Smith DE/OLB Missouri…Saints defense was exposed and now adding Aldon as either an end or OLB is a step in the right direct. Aldon has the potential to be the best DE/OLB prospect in the draft and in a few years teams above the Saints likely will regret passing on Aldon.
25. Seattle: Adrian Clayborn DE Iowa….Seahawks played as hard as the talent on the roster dictated now Coach Carroll will continue to upgrade talent across the board. Clayborn is a talented, safe pick who has received some great coaching and appears ready to at end once camp starts. Clayborn along with Heyward are probably the two most ready linemen on the boards.
26. Baltimore: Jimmy Smith CB Colorado…Big physical corner with a questionable character but at this point the Ravens will be poised to roll the dice as they have the infrastructure in their franchise to keep players like this in check.
27. Atlanta: Ryan Kerrigan DE Purdue…The Falcons need to give John Abraham some help (and eventually groom a replacement) and Kerrigan is just that type of player. Kerrigan will have an immediate impact on the pass rush for the Falcons and should develop into the ideal replacement for John Abraham.
28. New England: Danny Watkins OG Baylor….The perfect Pats guy and ideal replacement for the recent retired Stephen Neal. Coach Belichick will love bringing in a guy of Watkins caliber and I’d expect Watkins to start immediately.
29. Chicago: Nate Solder OT Colorado…Cutler’s safety is number 1 need this off season so adding a mountain of a man like Solder is a wise move. According to several reports Solder has a bit of an attitude but that never keeps the Bears from taking a chance (see Cutler). Some see Solder as a Robert Gallery guard but regardless a talent infusion is needed on the Oline and Solder is a step in the right direction.
30. NY Jets: Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA…Rex needs to recover from the Gholston fiasco and adding the under-rated Ayers will help. Ayers has the skills sets to be something special in a Rex Ryan scheme.
31. Pittsburgh: Brandon Harris CB Miami (Fla.)… Super Bowl exposed they average corners and Harris has the speed and ability to come in and start for the AFC Champs early in the season
32. Green Bay: Mikel LeShoure RB Illinois…What do you give a team that you think has everything? How about a franchise back to upgrade a questionable ground attack. Either teamed with or as a feature back LeShoure will give the Packers a nice shot in the arm in the run game and make them that much harder to prepare for next season (whenever that is).
Round 2
1. New England (from Carolina): Ryan Williams RB Virginia Tech…New England gets to add the back they need.
2. Buffalo: Jabaal Sheard DE Pittsburgh…help the defense with a player new defensive coach Wanny can vouch for.
3. Cincinnati: Derek Sherrod OT Mississippi State….As it appears that Andre Smith is a bust they need to upgrade the line especially with the likelihood of a new QB and new WRs in the mix.
4. Denver: Kyle Rudolph TE Notre Dame..Need to upgrade position and might as well add the best TE on the board.
5. Cleveland: Stephen Paea DT Oregon State…Shaun Rodgers was let go so they have a huge need for a talent influx on the defense. Paea is coming back from injury but is a Mike Holmgren type of guy and should push to start next season.
6. Arizona: Christian Ponder QB Florida State….Perfect fit for Arizona offense. Strong armed, very smart and very coachable. Ponder will have a learning curve but should be ready to take the reins earlier in the season than later.
7. Tennessee: Colin Kaepernick QB Nevada…Team needs a QB and no QB prospect is hotter than Colin. Has some attributes of Vince Young (strong armed, athletic) but unlike Vince is very coachable and seems poised to be quite a steal.
8. Dallas: Marcus Cannon OT/OG TCU…Marcus is very similar in size and skills to Larry Allen and with Dallas need of help at RT and RG, Cannon is an absolute slam dunk as his arrival likely means the departure of either Leonard Davis or Marc Columbo.
9. Washington: Torrey Smith WR Maryland…..Redskins offense needs weapon. Don’t have to go too far to add a new weapon.
10. Houston: Justin Houston OLB Georgia…Wade needs his type of players for the defense. Houston can bring the heat and cover so he’ll see the field early.
11. Minnesota: Andy Dalton QB TCU.. Vikings like will bring in a vet to lead the team but Dalton has the make up to be a starter in the league and right now the Vikings only QB is Joe Webb.
12. Detroit: Aaron Williams CB Texas…Lions need help at corner and Williams should push to start early in 2011.
13. San Francisco: Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas…Huge off-field issues with attitude haunting Mallett but Coach Jim Harbaugh could relate as some questioned his attitude and arrogances as a player. If Mallett is open to learning from Coach Harbaugh he will finally fill the void of the next great franchise QB the 49’ers have been looking for the past 15 years.
14. Denver (from Miami): Ras-I Dowling CB Virginia…Steal as long as he stays healthy.
15. St. Louis: Leonard Hankerson WR Miami (Fla.)…Sam gets a new HR threat and favorite toy.
16. Oakland: Stefen Wisniewski OG/OC Penn State….Gets the chance to follow in his family footsteps like he did at PSU and joins the Raiders where his uncle will also be coaching him.
17. Jacksonville: Randall Cobb WR Kentucky….The need for weapons is obvious in Jacksonville and the talented Randall Cobb will help with that need.
18. San Diego: Brooks Reed OLB Arizona….Chargers need to be able to bring heat and now adding Reed along with 1st round pick Watt the team will now have the best young pair and no longer miss Merrriman.
19. Tampa Bay: Davon House CB New Mexico State….Bucs need to be concerned about their corners and House can be groomed to replace Rhonde Barber.
20. NY Giants: Drake Nevis DT LSU….Force in the middle and a need likely with the expected departure of Barry Cofield.
21. Indianapolis: James Carpenter OT Alabama…new protector for Peyton. Might be one of the best two pure tackles on the board.
22. Philadelphia: Curtis Brown CB Texas…It appears that the Eagles corners got old in a hurry and without any replacements on the roster Brown is a nice add.
23. Kansas City: Sam Acho OLB Texas….High character player that with Coach Crennel’s coaching will be the type of player on this defense similar to many of the great OLBs in New England during Crennel’s time in New England.
24. New Orleans: Bruce Carter OLB North Carolina….Injury concerns but when healthy immediately helps the defense and if he stays healthy has skill sets to be a special player.
25. Seattle: Orlando Franklin OT Miami (Fla.)…..Seahawks need improvement on the line and Franklin has great versatility to help immediately.
26. Baltimore: Rahim Moore FS UCLA…Ravens realize the clock is ticking on their secondary and Moore is the best FS on the board and future leader of their secondary.
27. Atlanta: Greg Little WR North Carolina…Matt Ryan needs new more weapons to spread the field and keep teams honest.
28. New England: Christian Ballard DE Iowa..big end that Coach Belichick knows got proper coaching at Iowa and will push for playing time early in the season.
29. San Diego (from NY Jets): Jon Baldwin WR Pittsburgh…..If they can repair the Vincent Jackson relationship then Baldwin and Jackson will be a tough duo to cover. If not Baldwin will be the eventual replacement for Jackson. Character issues should be a concern but talent is too tempting especially in this bizarre off-season.
30. Chicago: Marvin Austin DT North Carolina..Tommie Harris is gone so there is a whole at tackle….not anymore.
31. Pittsburgh: Benjamin Ijalana OG Villanova…Youth and talent is needed on the line. Ijalana is both.
32. Green Bay: Clint Boling OG Georgia..Aaron Rodgers health is always a concern and Boling is battle test and ready to roll.
Round 3
1. Carolina: Allen Bailey DE Miami (Fla.)…need to rebuild the defensive line. Bailey has great numbers now just need to step up the production. Boom or bust type of player.
2. Cincinnati: DeMarco Murray RB Oklahoma…Cedric’s eventual replacement.
3. Denver: Martez Wilson ILB Illinois…Fox continues to rebuild the defense.
4. Buffalo: Marcus Gilbert OT Florida….Athletic linemen who will need some time but should start on the talent deprived offensive line.
5. Arizona: Mason Foster OLB Washington…Underrated player who could explode under a Ray Horton defensive scheme.
6. Cleveland: Dontay Moch OLB Nevada…The Browns need help across the board on defense and especially at OLB with their cuts prior to the lockout. Moch is a good player who will push to start in camp.
7. Dallas: DeAndre McDaniel SS Clemson…Player who’s grown up and seems like he’d be a great player under Rob Ryan’s guidance. Cowboys need a new FS (likely replaced by a former UT player once free agency start) and SS as Sensabaugh couldn’t cover well enough to get offered a return.
8. New Orleans – (from Washington): Kendall Hunter RB Oklahoma State…Replacement for Reggie Bush??
9. Houston: Quinton Carter FS Oklahoma….Texans defensive face lift continues.
10. New England - from Minnesota: Brandon Burton CB Utah…Between the Pats and 49’ers they might need to rename the draft after them. Burton is a perfect Coach Belichick guy.
11. Detroit: Jerrel Jernigan WR Troy…Lions needs a #3 receiver and the under-rated Jernigan is a perfect add.
12. San Francisco: Kenrick Ellis DT Hampton…Monster in the middle as the roster purge continues. Ellis is the small school guy that will play like a big time force early in his career.
13. Tennessee : Rodney Hudson OC Florida State…Finally Coach Munchak and Matthews get a linemen to groom. Hudson is a center you can pencil in for the next 10 years.
14. St. Louis: Luke Stocker TE Tennessee….Sam gets another weapon as the Rams look to shift from a more balanced offensive team.
15. Miami: Tim Barnes C Missouri …..Miami needs to improve straight up the middle and Barnes is probably the best prospect not invited to the combine.
16. Jacksonville: Chimdi Chekwa CB Ohio State….Excellent size/speed combo who faced top talent. Could really develop into something special.
17. Oakland: Shareece Wright CB USC….Perfect situation in Oakland as they look to try to replace Nhamdi.
18. San Diego: Quan Sturdivant ILB North Carolina…Chargers defense just keeps getting better and better.
19. New York Giants: Chris Carter OLB Fresno State…Carter is an under-rated prospect who was coached at Fresno State by a very similar man as he will be with the Giants. Carter could push to start by mid-season.
20. Tampa Bay: Colin McCarthy ILB Miami (Fla.)…Hard worker who will help the young Bucs take the next step and secure a playoff spot.
21. Philadelphia: Daniel Thomas RB Kansas State…Ideal number two back to McCoy.
22. Kansas City: Titus Young WR Boise State …A new weapon for the Chiefs offense as they got the taste of the playoffs in 2010 but want a lot more in 2011.
23. Indianapolis: Tyler Sash SS Iowa….Perfect replacement for Bob Sanders
24. New Orleans: Jurrell Casey DT USC….Let’s just say I don’t trust Shaun Rodgers to be on the field for too many plays on a regular basis.
25. San Diego – (from Seattle): James Brewer OT Indiana….Depth was a problem on the o-line last year and Brewer is talented enough to lock down the RT spot with a little coaching.
26. Baltimore: Jarvis Jenkins DT Clemson….Great fit for the defense as they constantly look to keep the line fresh and young.
27. Atlanta: Lance Kendricks TE Wisconsin…Tony Gonzalez’s replacement?
28. New England: K.J. Wright OLB Mississippi State…Another young, talented player to make the Pats that much tougher.
29. Chicago: Edmond Gates WR Abilene Christian..Worked with Johnny Knox and Gates is another HR threat for the rugged warrior Jay Cutler.
30. New York Jets: Pernell McPhee DE Mississippi State…Rex can never draft enough defense.
31. Pittsburgh: Jason Pinkston OT Pittsburgh….Ideal RT for the Steelers who need some young linemen to add to the roster.
32. Green Bay: Lawrence Wilson OLB Connecticut…LB depth was an issue last year and Wilson helps that immediately but can be groomed for a starter in the coming years in a Dom Capers scheme.
33. Carolina (compensatory): Lawrence Guy DT Arizona State…Another big body for the defensive line that desperately needs upgrading.
Round 4
1. Carolina: Ross Homan OLB Ohio State…More defensive help.
2. Seattle – (from New England via Denver): Will Rackley OG Lehigh…Underrated prospect that will be a steal at this point.
3. Buffalo: Marcus Gilchrist CB Clemson…Nice prospect on a team as they seem to always have a need for more corners.
4. Cincinnati: Pat Devlin QB Delaware…Intriguing prospect who can be groomed to take over under the right circumstances depending on what Jay Gruden wants to do on offense.
5. Cleveland: Pierre Allen DE Nebraska….Browns defense needs talent and Allen will help change that.
6. Arizona: Lee Ziemba OT Auburn….With young QBs questions you always want to make sure your offensive line is as loaded as possible and Ziemba can help upgrade that talent.
7. Philadelphia – (from Washington): Mark Herzlich OLB Boston College…Perfect player for Philly fans who overcame cancer to get back on the field. Herzlich makes Rocky look like a wimp. Herzlich is a great story and an Andy Reid type of guy.
8. Houston: Johnny Patrick CB Louisville….More talent for the new defense.
9. Minnesota: Joe Lefeged SS Rutgers..Hard hitting strong safety who has the skills to start early in his career.
10. Detroit: D.J. Williams TE Arkansas…With injury concerns at TE, DJ gives them another weapon for the passing game.
11. San Francisco: Shane Vereen RB California..Frank Gore insurance?
12. Tennessee: Greg Jones ILB Michigan State….Team overhaul continues and Greg Jones is the blue collar Munchak kind of guy.
13. Dallas: Greg Romeus DE Pittsburgh….Injuries derailed his career at Pittsburgh but with a clean bill of health Greg could excel and is smart enough and has the frame to get bigger and work in the Rob Ryan scheme.
14. Miami: Stephen Schilling OG Michigan…Phins keep improving the offensive line. Schilling and Barnes both should start immediately for this line.
15. St. Louis: Jordan Todman RB Connecticut….This pick adds years to the career of Steven Jackson and another new toy for Sam and Josh.
16. Oakland: Ricky Stanzi QB Iowa….Stanzi is a great game manager and nice #2 and with Bruce Gradkowski career in question Stanzi can learn behind Campbell.
17. Jacksonville: Chris Conte FS California…Jags need to upgrade entire secondary and Conte is poised to contend early for playing time.
18. San Francisco – (from San Diego): Kristofer O’Dowd C USC...Should start from day 1 as he’s faced a ton of NFL quality players and done well.
19. Tampa Bay: Brian Rolle OLB Ohio State…Good pick at this point. Rolle fits well with the Bucs.
20. New York Giants: Curtis Marsh CB Utah State…Hard working corner that will do what it takes to get on the field.
21. Kansas City: DeMarcus Love OT Arkansas..Boom or bust but something tells me the Chiefs will get the best out of him.
22. Indianapolis: Jamie Harper RB Clemson…With Adadi’s status influx the Colts will need to have other options in the fold and Harper is ideal for their system.
23. Philadelphia: Ahmad Black SS Florida…No player dropped more than Ahmad but productivity can’t be ignored. Reid is always ready to roll the dice for a guy who shows up on film.
24. Jacksonville –( from New Orleans): Virgil Green TE Nevada…Great receiving option who will get playing time early.
25. Buffalo – (from Seattle): Ian Williams DT Notre Dame…With a switch to a 3-4 you can’t have enough NT in the fold.
26. Baltimore: Niles Paul WR Nebraska….Still have holes at WR and Paul is a perfect #2 type receiver.
27. Atlanta: Zach Hurd OG Connecticut…Huge body that will make Matt Ryan’s life that much easier.
28. New England: Greg McElroy QB Alabama…Perfect #2 QB that I’m sure Coach Belicheck and his good friend, Nick Saban, had a few conversations on in the past few months. McElroy is a significant upgrade as the Pats number 2 man.
29. New York Jets: Tandon Doss WR Indiana….With the WRs in questions Doss is a very good option at this point and will allow them some flexibility.
30. Chicago: John Moffitt OG Wisconsin…Big body who will fit perfect in their future offensive line plans.
31. Pittsburgh: Terrence Toliver WR LSU..Talented TALL wide receiver they were lacking in 2010.
32. Green Bay: Austin Pettis WR Boise State…Another WR to add to the rotation.
33. Tennessee: Buster Skrine CB Chattanooga…Fast corner who is under the radar but has a nice combo of size and speed to really excel in their new scheme.
34. Green Bay: Jerrell Powe DT Mississippi…In the Dom Capers scheme can never have enough 330 bodies on the roster.
Round 5
1. Carolina: Roy Helu RB Nebraska…Perfect size back and a different dimension as the Panthers prepare for the likely departure of DeAngelo Williams.
2. Buffalo: Kelvin Sheppard ILB LSU….Bills always need linebackers especially the inside variety.
3. Cincinnati: Ricky Elmore DE Arizona…Another player to bring the heat.
4. Kansas City – (from Tampa Bay via Denver): Jaiquawn Jarrett FS Temple…Smart, talented and under-rated..fits perfect.
5. Arizona: Keith Williams OG Nebraska…Big body upfront as they attempt to rebuild their offense.
6. Cleveland: Casey Matthews ILB Oregon….See comments above. Browns need defensive help!!!
7. Houston: Jordan Cameron TE USC..Great athlete who will help stretch the field.
8. Minnesota : Deunta Williams FS North Carolina…Can’t have enough secondary help against the Packers.
9. Kansas City – (from Detroit): Rob Housler TE Florida Atlantic…Another offensive weapon to help the team.
10. San Francisco: Owen Marecic FB Stanford…Coach Harbaugh knows what he brings to the table and has a scheme he should fit perfect in.
11. Tennessee: Delone Carter RB Syracuse…Nice #2 to Chris Johnson.
12. Dallas: Ugo Chinasa DE Oklahoma State…A need pick with a player who has potential to really shine.
13. Washington: Taiwan Jones RB Eastern Washington…Probably the steal of the draft. Ideal Shanny RB.
14. St. Louis: Sione Fua DT Stanford…Big body for the Rams front line.
15. Miami: Chris Culliver FS South Carolina….Is it me or do they always seems like they need a FS in Miami.
16. Jacksonville: Da’Norris Searcy SS North Carolina…Secondary changes continue.
17. Oakland: Derrick Locke RB Kentucky….With Michael Bush likely free to go elsewhere Locke works well as the #2 to McFadden.
18. Philadelphia – (from San Diego): Derek Hall OT Stanford…Another team always looking for offensive line help but get a nice player in Hall.
19. Minnesota – (from New York Giants): Doug Hogue OLB Syracuse…Big, smart player who should help at least on special teams in 2011.
20. Tampa Bay: Bilal Powell RB Louisville….Ideal complimentary back to share carries.
21. Indianapolis: Jake Kirkpatrick C TCU…Accomplished player who is the ideal replacement for current NFLPA Labor Leader Jeff Saturday.
22. Philadelphia: Brandon Fusco C Slippery Rock…Underrated prospect that can be groomed to a starting role in the future.
23. Detroit – (from Kansas City): Jonas Mouton OLB Michigan…Nice player for their system who was stuck on some mediocre Michigan teams.
24. Washington – (from New Orleans): Jalil Brown CB Colorado..Depth needed at the position as the team continues to transition into a 3-4 scheme.
25. Seattle: Jeron Johnson SS Boise State…Underrated prospect who Pete Carroll has certainly studied.
26. Seattle – (from Baltimore): Brandon Hogan CB West Virginia…Talent overhaul continues.
27. Atlanta: Rashad Carmichael CB Virginia Tech….Good pick at this point as you know playing at Va. Tech he’ll certainly contribute on special teams.
