This is it. The beginning of the beginning. I love the combine. All the raw talent in one place. Last year, I didn't have the NFL Network, so I couldn't watch it. Now I have it, and the fates saw fit to give us a snow storm, so I could leave work early.
As a draft geek. I like to rank and compare players. Who is faster? Who isn't as tall as advertised? Where is the sleeper? Who is the workout warrior that will go early, even though everyone knows he is a dud?
As much love as I have for the Indy Winter Carnival, there are some things that could be better. First, instead of 40 time, let the O and D lines to a 10 yard sled push. If a guard is running 40 yards, either something really good or really bad has happened. The Lineman's combine should look like the world's strongest man competition.
Running backs and Receivers should carry a ball at all times. Any time they drop it, a tenth of a second gets added to the 40.
Linebackers and safeties get to run the 40, but they have to hit a dummy at then end. The time and the PSI of the hit will be combined for an aggregate score.
Skills are why the scouts are there. Show them how a QB can throw a ball through a tire at 20 yards. Don't be the fastest man in spandex.
