2015 NFL Moves that Make Great Sense to Me This Off-Season

1.       Brock Osweiler for EJ Manuel
The Denver Broncos have a new sheriff in town and he prefers quick, mobile quarterback who is as fleet a foot as they are able to drive the ball down field.    Buffalo, also has a new head coach, who is far from verse in the offensive side of the ball but their OC Greg Roman is a man whose resume reflects a man aware of the offensive line, tight end and running backs.  He wants a quarterback who is smart, with a strong arm and someone who has the arm strength to deliver in the windy city of Buffalo.   Peyton has the resume to make Kubiak sit and wait a year but Oseweiler suddenly is a square peg in a round circle.   A move of a two year deal with Mark Sanchez and the trade for Brock Oseweiler would create QB competition and add two QBs that fit the new regime.   EJ sitting behind Peyton for a year then going to a system that will use his full skill set makes this a likely win win trade for both teams

2.       Jeremy Maclin to KC Chiefs
Contract talks have broken down between Jeremy Maclin and the Eagles and it appears he will head to free agency.     There has to be a reason Chip drafted so many wide receivers last year.    Chip appears to believe his system makes the player and not the other way around and I highly doubt he’ll go above and beyond to bring Maclin back.   On the other hand Andy Reid prefers players he can trust and has a nice long history with Jeremy Maclin.   Maclin signing in Kansas City has all the making of a day one signing especially with KC is need for a number one wide receiver.

3.       Frank Gore to Pittsburgh Steelers
With the looming suspension of Le’ Veon Bell for the first two games of the season the Steelers need a veteran who can fill that starting role for the games and then are a powerful number two punch to their offense.   Gore might get more money offers from other teams but it’s likely anyone can nearly guarantee him a starting job for the first two weeks of the season.   Pittsburgh can and adding a vet like Gore would also benefit as a mentor and motivation to Bell to stay on the right path.

4.       Brian Hoyer to Tennessee Titans
During Ken Whisenhunt last season in Arizona he signed Brian Hoyer to the roster with the hope to see what he had to offer the rest of the season and the following camp.   For Hoyer, unfortunately Whisenhunt never made it to the next season and his time was short lived in Arizona.     Tennessee will look to add a veteran QB to go with Zach Mettenberger and likely will draft a third to fill out the roster but Hoyer’s resume has the making of that vet to hold down the fort, lead the team to an 8-8 type record and keep the seat warm for a franchise QB.

5.       Josh McCown to Cleveland Browns
The Browns need a short term answer at QB while they sit and wait if Manziel is another bust or if he can get his act together and succeed in the NFL.   McCown has the tools to be a starter and likely would take the job early in camp but will need some more tools to have any long term success.   Adding McCown and Michael Crabtree would be a good start in improving the talent on the team and giving the Browns some players with a track record of success to route for as they wait on Gordon and Manziel.

6.       Jermey Parnell to the Washington
Cowboys have an enormous amount of free agents and can’t resign everyone.  Parnell is looking for a starting spot and starter money and his old position coach is now in DC.  Like Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen before him the appeal of taking someone from the Cowboys will be again too hard to pass up for the gang in the nation’s capital.    Cowboys likely plan to keep Free, groom his replacement and let Parnell walk so the Redskins won’t have to outbid them but may have some competition within the division (NY Giants).   Snyder loves overspending so this is a day one or day two signing in my book.

7.        CJ Spiller to the NY Jets
Obvious connection to Jets new offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey, makes this appear to be a layup for a nice three year deal.   With Ryan in place in Buffalo I am not thinking CJ is any sort of priority to the new regime in Buffalo.   Ryan prefers running backs past their prime or ones that never had it.

8.       Mark Ingram to New England Patriots
It is a process of connecting the dots and looking at the history of Coach Bill Belichick including his life prior to being head man in New England.   The feeling is Belichick has to be growing leery of the running back of the moment and adding a talent like Ingram would put the position in good hands with a young man Coach Belichick has been familiar with long before he played for Bill’s close friend, Nick Saban.  Being the lead back on the Super Bowl Champs with a coach he’s known his whole life makes signing in New England easy for Mark Ingram.

9.       Jermaine Gresham to Oakland Raiders
New coach Jack Del Rio saw the importance of a good tight end during his time in Denver to both the passing and running game.  Gresham in an under used player in Cincinnati as 64 receptions is his career best for a season but he will turn 27 before the start of the season and is entering his prime.   He would prove to be a nice safety valve for upcoming star QB, Derek Carr.

10.   Jake Locker to Philadelphia Eagles
If Chip can’t move up to get Marcus Mariota this move makes a lot of sense.   Mark Sanchez is leaving, Chip is not 100% sold by any means on Nick Foles and Locker has a lot more of the tools Chip prefers than any other QB on his current roster.  Plus collecting Pac 10 QBs of the past appears to be a thing Chip enjoys (Nick Foles, Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley).

Gauging the Temperature of the NFL Pre Super Bowl

English: Some of the Miami Dolphins players an...
Fair to say the latest inflate gate by the New England Patriots caps off what likely can be looked at as the worst year image wise in NFL recent history.  From the several player scandals, to the questionable officiating especially in the playoffs to now the cheaters being cheaters again in New England.   Makes me scared for the combine and NFL Draft.    I bet Roger Goodell wishes he could find Doc Brown’s time machine and fast forward to Labor Day 2015.

Around the League

Atlanta Falcons:  Dan Quinn coming to town as the new sheriff. Adding Quinn and the younger Shanahan gives the Falcons a new voice and direction for both sides of the ball.   With Scott Pioli taking over draft and free agency decisions, Atlanta may finally put it all together and win the division.   Granted 9-7 might be all it takes if things go the same way again.

Arizona Cardinals:   With miss Todd Bowles and his aggressive defensive style but Bruce Arians is one of the smartest coaches in the NFL and he’ll promote the right replacement.   Can’t help but think had Arizona had a little luck with the health of their quarterbacks they might be representing the NFC in the Super Bowl.   Cardinals need to stay the course and draft wisely and add the correct free agents.    Good things ahead in Arizona as they now look to be the biggest divisional rival for the Seahawks.

Baltimore Ravens:  I thought the addition of Marc Trestman to the staff was a great move and should help the Ravens offense even more.   Trestman was in charge of the circus in Chicago and while not fair to judge abilities strictly off that if you review his resume one thing he can do is coach offense and especially quarterbacks.     Personally, I expect the Ravens offense to be noticeable improved.

Buffalo Bills:  Oh I had such high hopes for this team until they brought in the Rex Ryan carnival.    It is truly unfair for a franchise and fan base that deserve much better than a Ryan circus.   Bills fans are loyal and deserve to be the story when they win and not have a coach who makes it all about him.    The powers that be in Buffalo frighten me as you have no quarterback so you go and higher a guy who only knows defense and couldn’t develop a QB to save his life.   Only thing I can hope for Bills fans is when Rex crashes and burns that the Pegula family cleans house from top to bottom.

Carolina Panthers:  They will cut ties with Greg Hardy and look to find some balance to this team as week in and week out in 2014 you weren’t sure what team was showing up.    Ken Dorsey has done wonders with Cam and should continue at least until another team catches on and hires him to be an offensive coordinator.

Chicago Bears:   Great hire with John Fox but real question is will anyone ever get to Jay Cutler?  I doubt it.   Bears would be wise to add a quality back up and add QB to draft needs in coming years.

Cincinnati Bengals:  Andy Dalton is the new Tony Romo…by that I mean will be blamed for everything until he wins big games.    Dalton has not played his best but if Cincinnati is ready to move on they should place him on the market.   I can things of ten teams that would be on the phone fairly quick.    Coach Lewis we have Coach O’Brien on line one.

Cleveland Browns:  Another new offensive coordinator for the owner who mentions continuity a lot.   Similar to Buffalo the fans in Cleveland deserve to field a winner so hopefully they can cash in with the two picks in round one they have this year and continue to move forward.    It’s Johnny Football time now and by the end of 2015 we will know if the Browns will be in the market in the 2016 for another franchise QB or not.   I am betting they will be but I’m wrong once in a while.

Dallas Cowboys:  Keep the coaching brain trust together but will they be able to keep the players.   I expect Murray to leave but the other key guys will likely resign with the loss of some depth.   Remember the year the Cowboys drafted DeMarco Murray the Cowboys tried to move back and get Mark Ingram (a 2015 free agent).

Denver Broncos: I am not sold that Gary Kubiak is an upgrade over John Fox but I think it’s more of “it just fits better” type of hire.   Similar to Garrett in Dallas, Kubiak knows the culture in Denver can handle the powers that be (Elway) and wants to be there.   Interesting to see if Chicago quietly makes inquires on Brock Osweiler because while Kubiak will adjust for Peyton it is certain Osweiler is not the text book Gary Kubiak QB.

Detroit Lions: Will Suh return? I would not bet on it.  The Lions brass will say the right things but similar to Raiola, Caldwell wants to win with class and is trying very hard to eliminate the dirty play stuff.     They can let Suh walks and likely get a 3rd compensatory pick in 2016 and use all that money to add a few quality players to improve the overall talent base of the Lions.

Green Bay Packers:  The epic collapse will be what the season is remembered for but that’s unfair.     Green Bay had a terrific season and with some additions to the defense can be right back in

A Review of the 2013 NFL Draft--AFC

The 2013 NFL Draft, held April 25-27 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, lacked the same brilliant prospects at skill positions as last year -- but it offered a lot potential for teams looking to bolster their offensive and defensive lines. Here's a look at how AFC teams drafted:

The Kansas City Chiefs held the 1st overall pick and took offensive tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. Fisher was viewed as the top tackle prospect and should have a very long career in the NFL. The Chiefs other draft picks were Travis Kelce, Knile Davis, Nico Johnson, Sanders Commings, Eric Kush, Braden Wilson, and Mike Catapano.

The Jacksonville Jaguars held the 2nd overall pick in the draft and took offensive tackle Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M. At 6’6” and 306 pounds, Joeckel should be able to provide great protection for quarterback Blaine Gabbert. The Jaguars other draft picks were John Cyprien, Dwayne Gratz, Ace Sanders, Denard Robinson, Josh Evans, Jeremy Harris, and Demetrius McCray.

The Miami Dolphins traded up in the draft and selected defensive end Dion Jordan from Oregon with the 3rd overall pick. Jordan has a rare combination of size and speed, and should be able to provide a consistent edge rush for the Dolphins. Miami's other draft picks were Jamar Taylor, Dallas Thomas, Will Davis, Jelani Jenkins, Dion Sims, Mike Gillislee, Caleb Sturgis, and Don Jones.

The Cleveland Browns held the 6th overall pick and took defensive end Barkevious Mingo from LSU. Mingo should be able to immediately pressure the quarterback and provide a spark for the team. The Browns other draft selections were Leon McFadden, Jamoris Slaughter, Armonty Bryant, and Garrett Gilkey.

The New York Jets held the 9th and 13th overall picks. They took cornerback Dee Milliner from Alabama and defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson from Missouri in the first round. These picks were somewhat surprising because of the lack of offensive threats that the Jets currently have on their roster. The Jets other picks were Geno Smith, Brian Winters, Oday Aboushi, William Campbell, and Tommy Bohanon.

The Tennessee Titans took offensive guard Chance Warmack from Alabama with the 10th overall pick. Warmack should be able to open up running lanes for the Titans running backs. The Titans other draft picks were Justin Hunter, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Zaviar Gooden, Brian Schwenke, Lavar Edwards, Khalid Wooten, and Daimion Stafford.

The San Diego Chargers held the 11th overall pick and they took offensive tackle D.J. Fluker from Alabama. Fluker should be able to provide protection for Philip Rivers immediately. The Chargers other draft picks were Manti Te’o, Keenan Allen, Steve Williams, Tourek Williams, and Brad Sorensen.

The Oakland Raiders -- who have had some of the worst drafts imaginable during the past two decades -- took cornerback D.J. Hayden from the University of Houston with the 12th overall pick. This pick was somewhat surprising because many experts considered other cornerbacks to be better than Hayden. (Then again, it's the Raiders so we sort of expect these type of mind-boggling moves.) Hayden had a medical issue last November but managed to make a full recovery. The Raiders other draft picks were Menelik Watson, Sio Moore, Tyler Wilson, Nick Kasa, Latavius Murray, Mychal Rivera, Stacy McGee, Brian Butler, and David Bass.

The Buffalo Bills selected quarterback EJ Manuel with the 16th overall pick in the draft. Manuel played at Florida State and is a great athlete but some question his accuracy. This pick was seen by many experts as being a reach. The Bills other draft picks were Robert Woods, Kiko Alonso, Marquise Goodwin, Duke Williams, Jonathan Meeks, Dustin Hopkins, and Chris Gragg.

The Pittsburgh Steelers held the 17th overall pick and took outside linebacker Jarvis Jones from Georgia. Jones was drafted to eventually replace James Harrison in the Steelers 3-4 defense. The Steelers also drafted Le’Veon Bell, Markus Wheaton, Shamarko Thomas, Landry Jones, Terry Hawthorne, Justin Brown, Vince Williams, and Nick Williams.

The Cincinnati Bengals selected tight end Tyler Eifert from Notre Dame with the 21st overall pick. Eifert was a standout at Notre Dame and should fit in well with the Bengals other offensive weapons. The Bengals also drafted Giovani Bernard, Margus Hunt, Shawn Williams, Sean Porter, Tanner Hawkinson, Rex Burkhead, Cobi Hamilton, Reid Fragel, and T.J. Johnson.
